Gary Adkins Named PNG President
(Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 9, 2007) – Gary Adkins of Edina, Minnesota
has been selected as the new President of the Professional Numismatists Guild
(PNG) for the two-year term, 2007 to 2009. The appointment was made by
the PNG Board of Directors which selects its President, Vice President, Secretary
and Treasurer from among current board members.
Announcement of the new officers was made at the PNG general membership meeting
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 6, 2007.
Also elected by the general members to serve on the PNG Board are: Paul Montgomery,
Beaumont, Texas who was named Vice President; Jonathan K. Kern, Lexington,
Kentucky, PNG Secretary; Jeffrey F. Bernberg, Willowbrook, Illinois, PNG Treasurer;
and board members Thomas M. Denly, Boston, Massachusetts; Kathleen Duncan,
Olympia, Washington; Terrence F. Hanlon, Addison, Texas; and Robert Rhue, Aurora,
Colorado.
Duncan is only the third woman to serve as a PNG officer since the organization
was founded in 1955. (The other two are Catherine Bullowa and Ruth Bauer,
both of Philadelphia.)
“The PNG has a responsibility to provide leadership, sustainability and
growth, not only for our own benefit, but also for the viability of this fabulous
hobby and the industry in general. It is the intent of my tenure as President
to emphasize the leadership role that PNG should play, and provide the direction
and energy necessary to accomplish this goal,” Adkins told the membership
meeting conducted on the eve of the annual PNG Day conducted in conjunction
with the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money® convention.
Adkins outlined eight major goals he wants to accomplish during his term as
PNG President. He has established committees to encourage collectors
and dealers to work together in these areas:
- Arbitration and Bylaws: Evaluate processes and procedures with an emphasis
on ethics and the creation of and enforcement of a “Code of Conduct.”
- Consumer Protection and Fraud: Review image and reality of PNG efforts
to protect collectors and investors. PNG will continue to examine and
monitor efforts by other consumer protection organizations to combat fraud.
- Promotion and Public Relations: Building and promoting the PNG “brand,” and
educating collectors and investors through the news media and website promotions.
- Membership and Benefits: Review membership incentives, bonding, security
and promotional efforts on behalf of members. Recruitment of new members
and retention of existing ones.
- Finance and Development: Building on our current position of financial
strength and look into the future needs of the organization. Prepare
a budget and review our revenue sources and expenses.
- Regulatory and Taxation Issues: Liaison with the Industry Council for Tangible
Assets (ICTA) and consider assignment of a PNG dealer in each state to monitor
adverse legislation affecting collectors and dealers.
- Dealer Relations: Provide a forum for members and non-members to associate
and communicate ideas for promoting the hobby and the betterment of our industry.
- Organizational Relations: Improving relations and synergy with other organizations,
such as the ANA, ICTA, International Association of Professional Numismatists
(IAPN), Florida United Numismatists (FUN), Central States Numismatic Society
(CSNS), and others.
“With support and feedback from our members and the numismatic community,
we hope to continually improve the PNG and its commitment to membership as
well as to the industry and the collectors and investors who support it,” said
Adkins.
